Tri-Cities Airport Begins Security Checkpoint Expansion

Tri-Cities Airport (TRI) has begun the construction of a security checkpoint expansion project to create a larger and updated space for passenger screening.

The project includes the expansion of the checkpoint area as well as renovations to the existing screening and exit areas. Once complete, the updated space will provide a more functional layout for passengers moving through security.

“Providing a positive experience for our passengers is a priority, and this project is an important investment in that experience,” said Gene Cossey, President & CEO of the Tri-Cities Airport Authority. “The expanded space will give us an updated checkpoint that better serves our passengers and the needs of our growing airport.”

Construction is expected to continue through Spring 2028 and will take place in several phases. The current phase focuses on building the new addition and is expected to have minimal impact on passengers.

Temporary changes to the security checkpoint are expected to begin in Summer 2027. During that phase, the checkpoint will transition from two lanes to one. Security wait times are expected to be longer, and passengers should plan to allow extra time at the airport.

In Late 2027, security screening is expected to move into the new addition while the existing checkpoint area is renovated. The project is expected to be complete in Spring 2028.

TRI will share construction updates and passenger information throughout the project. For the latest timeline, project renderings, and information about upcoming changes, visit flytri.com/checkpoint-expansion.
