Tri-Cities Airport Conducts Full-Scale Emergency Drill with Regional First Responders

Tri-Cities Airport conducted its federally required triennial full-scale emergency exercise on Tuesday, May 26, bringing together airport personnel and emergency response agencies from across the region to test emergency preparedness, coordination, and response capabilities during a simulated aircraft accident.
Required every three years by the Federal Aviation Administration, the full-scale exercise is designed to evaluate how airport personnel and local agencies respond to a major emergency scenario in real time. The drill tested communications, incident command, emergency operations, mutual aid coordination, and overall response effectiveness under simulated emergency conditions.
The exercise engaged employees from multiple airport departments, allowing staff to practice their roles and responsibilities during a large-scale emergency while working alongside first responders and partner agencies. Airport operations, communications, public safety coordination, and emergency procedures were all incorporated into the scenario to help ensure preparedness across the entire airport operation.
“This exercise is an important part of ensuring our airport and regional emergency partners remain prepared to respond quickly and effectively during a major incident,” said Chris Stipo, Director of Operations at Tri-Cities Airport. “These drills allow agencies and airport personnel to train, strengthen relationships, and identify opportunities to improve response efforts before a real emergency ever occurs.”
In addition to the full-scale response exercise, participating responders also had the opportunity to train using a specialized aircraft fire training simulator brought onsite for the event, providing hands-on experience in realistic aircraft rescue and firefighting scenarios.
Participating agencies included the Tri-Cities Airport Fire Department, Bristol Tennessee Fire Department, Carter County EMS, Gray Fire Department, HEART Helicopter, Johnson City Fire Department, Kingsport Lifesaving Crew, Kingsport Fire Department, Kingsport Police Department, Piney Flats Volunteer Fire Department, Sullivan County EMA, Sullivan County EMS, Sullivan County Fire Department, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, Sullivan County Volunteer Fire Department, Virginia State Police MedFlight, and Warriors’ Path Volunteer Fire Department.
The exercise reflects the airport’s continued commitment to safety, preparedness, and regional collaboration.
